Nukes For Mullahs, But Not ‘Mericans?

Posted by: Laer at 12:38 pm

In his speech to the Muslim world, President Obama outlined a shocking new policy regarding Iran and nukes:

And any nation - including Iran - should have the right to access peaceful nuclear power if it complies with its responsibilities under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. That commitment is at the core of the Treaty, and it must be kept for all who fully abide by it. And I am hopeful that all countries in the region can share in this goal.

That certainly raises some interesting questions, not the least of which is the troubling fact that Iran has taken no bait to draw it from its nuclear - as in bomb, not power - ambitions. And that niggling matter about how utterly untrustworthy they have been, starting with blowing off international rules and siezing our embassy staff.

And I have to wonder why Obama is so copacetic with nuclear power for the Mullahs while he’s so troubled about its use here in the US. Sure, his official energy position mentions it (barely - one word only), but as evidenced by this Tim Russert interview last year, he’s ready to throw up plenty of obstacles to domestic nukes:

I think we do have to look at nuclear, and what we’ve got to figure out is can we store the material properly? Can we make sure that they’re secure? Can we deal with the expense? Because the problem is, is that a lot of our nuclear industry, it reinvents the wheel. Each nuclear power plant that is proposed has a new design, has—it, it has all kinds of changes, there are all sorts of cost overruns. So it has not been an effective option. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be an effective option, but we’re going to have to figure out storage and safety issues.

Besides all the politically disingenuous crap about each plant being a proposed new design, does he trust Tehran for a moment to safely store its nuclear materials or secure its facilities? Does he think cost over-runs should be foisted on economically ravaged Iranians? Does he really think nukes are an effective option for a country that’s up to its eyeballs in oil?

There is no reason for Iran to have a nuclear power program other than to shield an illegal nuclear weapons program.  But there’s plenty of reason for us to. The president was way too soft on Iran in his speech (for practical reasons, as I explained earlier today), and remains way too hard on us.

With Obama winning the presidency by seven percent, we can't blame the media. Their laudatory coverage and refusal to extensively probe into Obama's background and [lack of] experience was at best responsible for five percent of his vote, the pundits tell us. Here is a compilation of over 100 significant instances of pro-Obama/anti-McCain bias during the 2008 campaign.
