Obama Giddy About Stimulus “Success”

Posted by: Laer at 11:39 am

You can’t go around asking the American people for $787 billion and then just sit back and pretend everything’s OK. You have to go out and actually say everything’s OK, which Prez-O said today:

“What is most remarkable about this effort … isn’t just the size of our investment or the number of projects we’re investing in. It’s how quickly, efficiently and responsibly those investments have been made. Because these projects are getting approved more quickly than we thought … and because these projects are costing less than we thought, we can utter a sentence rarely heard in recent years: This government effort is coming in ahead of schedule and under budget.”

Let’s hold him to that, shall we? When we begin to learn the details of these projects, I’m sure it won’t be so rosy. Many would have been funded without the stimulus, so our tax dollars just replaced more local revenues. Corruption will abound, with phantom workers being paid and politicians engaging in graft. Illegal immigrants will be found on the worksites. And more than a few unneeded projects will be built just because money was there to be spent.

Besides, the money Obama’s talking about is just six percent of the overall stimulus. How many people are going back to work with the other 94 percent? Well, Obama did allude to a handful of health clinic workers who weren’t laid off because the boss saw a big future in government-funded healthcare, but that’s about it.

AP points to the reason of today’s media event by the prez:

Obama won quick passage of his $787 billion economic stimulus plan shortly after taking office, using the argument that the plan would put Americans back to work on public projects. Since then, its popularity has waned; thus, administration officials have been highlighting quick progress and efficiency.

So … in the Bush years, that would be called hype. Is it OK to call it that now?

And what’s this? In his intro speech, VP Biden said the road to recovery had to be “repaved.” What?! Already? Shoddy stimulus workmanship!

With Obama winning the presidency by seven percent, we can't blame the media. Their laudatory coverage and refusal to extensively probe into Obama's background and [lack of] experience was at best responsible for five percent of his vote, the pundits tell us. Here is a compilation of over 100 significant instances of pro-Obama/anti-McCain bias during the 2008 campaign.
