Chief Hysterics Fail The Hype Test

H

ere at Pearce Palace, we seem to have allowed Earth Hour to pass unnoticed. The low-watt lights out front were illuminating our non-natural front yard, the veranda lights were on out back, and inside, Incredible Wife and I comfied down in front of our big screen TV for some chicken picata and asparagus that was quite tasty despite using not one locally grown incredient.

Elsewhere, our taxpayer dollars let us know, things were different. Says Voice of America:

From an Antarctic research station, to the Great Pyramids of Egypt and several buildings in Washington, including the Smithsonian Castle, famous structures went dark in a campaign to highlight the threat of climate change.

In Chile, we learn, President Michelle Bachelet marked the occasion by hosting a candlelight dinner for VEEP Joe Biden. I wonder if they cut his mike as well. And in China, they cut the illumination on the famous Bird’s Nest national stadium. But they didn’t give the coal miners a break from their shifts.

Casting about in the dark – a condition not exactly unknown to United Nations officials – Yvo de Boer, the UN’s top climate wonk, said that because some true believers and assorted political grandstanders turned off their lights for an hour, it was a clear sign that “the world” (that includes you and me) wants negotiators at the upcoming New Kyoto talks to get nasty serious about stopping this global warming thing in its tracks.

But in Nashville, we learn that the chief of the Warmie Hysterics, Dreary Al himself, failed to darken his own door:

Drew Johnson, the president of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, decided to drive by Gore’s mansion in Nashville at 8:48 p.m. and records that floodlights were on illuminating the driveway leading up to the main quarter.

“I pulled up to Al’s house, located in the posh Belle Meade section of Nashville, at 8:48 p.m. – right in the middle of Earth Hour,” he wrote on his blog. “I found that the main spotlights that usually illuminate his 9,000 square foot mansion were dark, but several of the lights inside the house were on.”

He added: “The kicker, though, were the dozen or so floodlights grandly highlighting several trees and illuminating the driveway entrance of Gore’s mansion. I [kid] you not, my friends, the savior of the environment couldn’t be bothered to turn off the gaudy lights that show off his goofy trees.” (World Net Daily)

Perhaps he was putting his personal safety ahead of saving the planet, much like the saner of us are putting jobs and food we can afford ahead of cap and trade.  Or perhaps he figured the house lights were hype enough, and there was really no need to get too carried away with silly symbols.

Speaking of silly symbols, the Obamas and our sainted Dem leaders – true believers in global warming all – didn’t join in the festivities either, as this picture, taken at the peak of Earth Hour, reveals:

Whines Science Insider:

The Administration has made no announcements about turning off or dimming lights at the White House, major federal buildings, monuments, or U.S. government facilities. No educational or outreach events are planned on what’s the closest thing to an international commemoration day for global warming.

In the last month, officials with the World Wildlife Fund met with White House environmental officials as well as congressional leaders to urge their participation. But, 3 days away from the historic event, there’s no indication that the federal government is planning much more than putting a banner ad on the Environmental Protection Agency Web site.

A call to the Council on Environmental Quality at the White House yielded little but a suggestion that this reporter call EPA. EPA mentioned the ad. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office said nothing was planned.

So what’s up with that?  The writer blames security (who would want to hurt the beneficent Dems?) or “bureaucratic snags.”  If the bureacrats can’t unsnag something as simple as turning off the lights for an hour, should we really be trusting them with little things like … I don’t know … the future of our country?

P.S.:  A hat tip for this to Track-a-Crat.   I came across his very nice little blog all by myself a few days back, and recently got a nice email from its scribe, who seems like a good guy. Take a gander; I think you’ll like it.

With Obama winning the presidency by seven percent, we can't blame the media. Their laudatory coverage and refusal to extensively probe into Obama's background and [lack of] experience was at best responsible for five percent of his vote, the pundits tell us. Here is a compilation of over 100 significant instances of pro-Obama/anti-McCain bias during the 2008 campaign.
