Obama A One-Termer?

Posted by: Laer at 07:34 pm

Never, ever, ever did the legions who referred to Barack Obama as “The One” ever consider that the number might refer to the number of terms he’ll end up serving, but that’s already the hand-wringing of some top-level White House reporters.

Here’s the soundbite from the Politico report; as you read it remember:  He’s not even sworn in yet!

White House reporters for The New York Times predict that the market collapse will force President-elect Barack Obama to abandon for now many of his campaign promises.

If his stimulus plan “doesn’t work out, he may very well be a one-term president,” said Jeff Zeleny, who covered Obama’s campaign. “It’s hard to imagine that he could be reelected if the economy’s in the exact same position four years from now.”

Also giving downbeat assessments were NYT reporters Sheryl Gay Stolberg and Peter Baker.  Baker said you can forget about healthcare reform or carbon caps, at least any time soon, and Stolberg said he has a big challenge in lowering the electorate’s expectations.

To those of us who incredulously measured Barack’s promises against his executive experience, this is no big surprise.  But, apparently, it’s a real shocker to the NYT trio and those gathered to hear them.

With Obama winning the presidency by seven percent, we can't blame the media. Their laudatory coverage and refusal to extensively probe into Obama's background and [lack of] experience was at best responsible for five percent of his vote, the pundits tell us. Here is a compilation of over 100 significant instances of pro-Obama/anti-McCain bias during the 2008 campaign.
