Obama Action Triggers Gun Control Fears

uried in an NY Times story lauding Prez-elect Obama for probing unmercifully into the background of anyone applying for work in his administration was this passing note:

Only the smallest details are excluded; traffic tickets carrying fines of less than $50 need not be reported, the application says. Applicants are asked whether they or anyone in their family owns a gun. They must include any e-mail that might embarrass the president-elect, along with any blog posts and links to their Facebook pages.

Why would Obama ask this question if the Supreme Court just ruled that it’s unconstitutional for jurisdictions to ban gun ownership? Why does the inquiry extend beyond the applicant and on to “anyone in their family?”

There are only two reasons I can see:  One, Obama just loves guns and wants people in his administration who feel the same way and will work with him to protect Second Amendment rights.  Or, Obama just hates guns and wants people in his administration who feel the same way and will work with him to take away Second Amenment rights.

Given the evidence, I’ll go with the latter.

You are right to raise this issue.  I would denounce Obama’s use of information concerning views on gun ownership or gun ownership outright to evaluate individuals for employment in his White House.  I was horrified to see the Bush administration select members of the Justice Department, purely on how they scored on a test of Republican values (e.g., do you support pro-life position on abortion, etc.).  Considering that abortion is recognized as a Constitutionally protected right since Roe v. Wade, it was WRONG for the Bush administration to hire or not on the basis of personal views on the subject.  I’m not sure you called the Bushies out on it on your blog, but would assume that you would quickly denounce it if the topic were raised on your blog…

Actually, I called the left out for thinking that a president doesn’t have the right to staff Justice with people with a conservative view of the law.  Of course he has that right.  If you re-read the post above, I didn’t say Obama doesn’t have the right to appoint who he wants to appoint; I just gave folks a heads up of where he’s going.

With Obama winning the presidency by seven percent, we can't blame the media. Their laudatory coverage and refusal to extensively probe into Obama's background and [lack of] experience was at best responsible for five percent of his vote, the pundits tell us. Here is a compilation of over 100 significant instances of pro-Obama/anti-McCain bias during the 2008 campaign.
