Media Bias #52

O as in Void, Nil

Just playing a little Media Bias 2008 catch-up here.

Oprah is media.  If you don’t get that, think back to the coverage her endorsement of Barack Obama and subsequent campaign appearances generated.  So, after giving the Obama ticket plenty of Oprah prime time, what did she do when a woman – you know, the kind of chromosome line-up that defines her viewership – got the VP nod?  You know the story: Palin will be a no show on O’s show.

But Oprah is an equal opportunity purveyor of media bias:  She also never invited the first woman running a serious campaign for president, Hillary Clinton, on her show.

She is a good liar, though, telling TMZ:

“There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show.”

You know they discussed it.  They just don’t want to discuss their discussions publicly.

I think O was telling the truth when she said there was no discussion about having Palin on her show.  What she didn’t say was that there was plenty of discussion about not having Palin on her show – an exercise in the subtleties of meaning – not unlike the meaning of the word “is”.

With Obama winning the presidency by seven percent, we can't blame the media. Their laudatory coverage and refusal to extensively probe into Obama's background and [lack of] experience was at best responsible for five percent of his vote, the pundits tell us. Here is a compilation of over 100 significant instances of pro-Obama/anti-McCain bias during the 2008 campaign.
