Media Bias #50

Apple Pie And Motherhood

There are so many examples of women in the mediaslamming Sarah Palin for daring to run for vice president when she has children, from my inside the beltway and former journalist mother

Oh, I think she’s just awful. I thought you’d be upset McCain chose her. He could drop dead at any minute and then we’d have a woman with no foreign policy experience in the White House and we don’t want a woman with five children to be president!

… to Sally Quinn (who later apologized):

Everyone woman I know practically is a working mother. We have conflicts and guilts that men simply don’t have. And, basically the burden of raising children falls on the mother, no matter what kind of a job she has. So, I think that to, you know, we’re so far beyond the feminist argument here. This is not about feminism, it’s not about sexism, it’s simply about can you do the job? One of the things I noticed over this last convention is John McCain, they must have said it 1,000 times, I put my country first. He put his country first. And I think if you’re talking about the commander in chief and that is what she is likely to be given his age and his health. Will she put her country first, or will she put her family first?

For the record, Geraldine Ferarro had three children when she ran for VP.  Granted, they were all in their early 20s, but no one asked if she’d drop everything if something happened to one of them.  Nor does the media ask it of any of countless Dem elected women in lower offices, or of any men.

If elected, John McCain would have to die for Sarah Palin to be president.  If elected, Barack Obama would be in the White House on day one with young children not that different in age from Palin’s youngest, and without older daughters to help – but no one in the media has raised questions about that, just as they raised no questions about JFK.

It’s just a Sarah-only question.

With Obama winning the presidency by seven percent, we can't blame the media. Their laudatory coverage and refusal to extensively probe into Obama's background and [lack of] experience was at best responsible for five percent of his vote, the pundits tell us. Here is a compilation of over 100 significant instances of pro-Obama/anti-McCain bias during the 2008 campaign.
