20: Obama’s Summer Road Trip

Writing this as Obama winds down his summer road trip, faithful media troupe in tow, everything is so overly fawning that I’ll just settle for the LA Times’ coverage of Obama’s speech in Berlin as a marker for all the media bias exhibited during the road show. How’s this for hero worship and devil defiling?

With the sun setting behind him, Obama spoke of issues that are burned into the European consciousness but that have been points of contention with the George W. Bush White House. These included the war in Iraq, troops in Afghanistan, immigration, terrorism and torture.

“I doubt that Obama is the messiah, but I hope that, if he gets elected, there will be some essential change in foreign and security policy,” said Martin Wegner, a 38-year-old software engineer who joined the Obama fans — some of whom had to wait hours to clear security checks.

Do ya think Iraq, Afghanistan and torture are really burned into the European consciousness? That they give any of them much thought at all as they bask under the protection we offer with our blood and our treasure?

And sure, terrorism and immigration are European issues – but not ones that would be solved by Obama’s over-arching foreign policy which, if I heard his speech right and if I took in his tour right, can be summarized as “let’s all give each other a big hug while we ditch Iraq.”

But I’m shocked … shocked! … that the LA Times accepted a quote from someone who harbors some doubt that Obama is the messiah.

With Obama winning the presidency by seven percent, we can't blame the media. Their laudatory coverage and refusal to extensively probe into Obama's background and [lack of] experience was at best responsible for five percent of his vote, the pundits tell us. Here is a compilation of over 100 significant instances of pro-Obama/anti-McCain bias during the 2008 campaign.
