19: Fairness, Couric Style
Katie was positively gushing: MY EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH BARACK OBAMA! As the big event drew near, a few brave souls sort-of asked if she was aware that there was another candidate for prez out there, so at the last minute, without fanfare, CBS supplemented Couric’s face-to-face Obama interview with a satellite interview with that other guy.
Fair enough … not. For starters, the CBS News Web site tonight (July 22) has a photo of Obama in a box at the very top, with this copy:
Obama: Surge Doesn’t Meet Long-Term Goals
In An Exclusive Interview With Katie Couric, Illinois Senator Defends Position On Troop Buildup
Underneath that is a headline about Hurricane Dolly poised to hit Texas, and under that, finally, is the headline, McCain: “We Will Come Home In Victory.“ No photo, no indication it’s an interview by Couric.
Not exactly fair and unbiased, eh? Oh, and then there’s the little fact that the Obama interview was 34 percent longer than the McCain interview. The interviews themselves carry on the bias. Read them yourself, or just consider this soft-ball first question to Obama:
Katie Couric: Sen. Obama, first of all, you have not been to Iraq since 2006. What did you learn on your recent visit that surprised you? Or what was new?
What did you do this summer, Oh Awesome One? What’s your favorite color? Do you like me? In contrast, here’s her ball-breaker first question to McCain:
Katie Couric: Sen. McCain, Prime Minister Maliki and Sen. Obama seem to be on the same page when it comes to a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops by 2010. Are you feeling like the odd man out here?
Well, at least she deigned to talk to him.
