12.Veering Left of the Obvious

Both prez candidates are left-handed, so WaPo’s Melissa Roth decided to write a cute little feature on the nation’s most visible southpaws. Check out her lead:

John McCain may veer to the right, but make no mistake: The Republican presidential contender is a born lefty, just like his Democratic counterpart, Barack Obama.

Uh-huh. Given that McCain is hardly a hard-right kind of guy, this lead would have been better: Barack Obama is friends with lots of lefties like William Ayres, but that’s not all that’s left about him: He’s a born lefty, just like his Republican counterpart, John McCain.

But of course she went out of her way to avoid that approach.

With Obama winning the presidency by seven percent, we can't blame the media. Their laudatory coverage and refusal to extensively probe into Obama's background and [lack of] experience was at best responsible for five percent of his vote, the pundits tell us. Here is a compilation of over 100 significant instances of pro-Obama/anti-McCain bias during the 2008 campaign.
